II V I Lines Using Triad Pairs
II V I Lines Using Triad Pairs – This mini-lesson is about using triad pairs to create melodic lines over a II V I progression. Many modern jazz players use this technique in their soloing, and it can create some very intriguing melodies.
I have illustrated four examples below, and all are being played over a II V I progression in C major. (note that the G7 chord is altered in this progression)
Over the Dmin7 chord, I am using G and F major, and over the G7alt chord, I am playing Eb and Db (major) triads.
As a quick theory exercise, see if you can analyse why these triad pairs sound effective over the underlying chords?
