Scales on Single Strings II

Scales on Single Strings (Part Two)

In the first lesson about playing scales on single strings, we looked at learning the notes of the D Dorian mode on each individual string. In this lesson I’m going to continue with the same approach but now use a completely different scale, before we eventually combine the two in a future lesson.

Our next scale is the Super Locrian mode (sometimes also called the ‘Altered’ scale) This is a very useful scale/mode to know, as it is a popular choice for improvising over altered dominant 7th chords. I have illustrated the scale from a G root note, making this a scale suitable for G7alt etc.

Here is the scale mapped out across all six strings in very much the same way we learned the D Dorian mode last time.

Follow the exact same procedure you used last time in learning the D Dorian mode, but now using the notes from the G Super Locrian mode (this will likely take quite a few days/weeks of regular practice for both scales)

If you’d like study more jazz orientated material like this, but in far greater detail and depth, you might also like to consider my online jazz guitar lessons

I’ve added the above diagram as a PDF here: G Super Locrian Scale (all strings up to 15th fret)

Here is a single chord backing track for practicing the G Super Locrian mode:
